What Steph didn’t share in her babymoon post on Instagram

In March 2018 Steph Kelly was in a car accident that changed her life. Steph received injuries to her neck, ribcage and shoulder, but months after the crash, her digestion wasn’t back to where it had been before the accident. What followed was years of sickness, time spent in hospital, and a lot of trial & error, before eventually landing on a solution that means she now receives her nutrition via her veins.

In this episode we sat down with Steph to learn about the events that have lead up to now, what her day-to-day looks like, how she feels about her body, and what she wishes more people knew about invisible illnesses.

Our words of the year

This week it’s all about sleep! With baby number two on the way, Steph has been thinking about how she’ll approach sleep this time around and if she & Josh will use the same techniques as they used with Harvey.

To help - Steph sat down with developmental paediatrician (and KICBUMP fave!) Dr Billy Garvey. Billy is a senior specialist at one of Australia’s largest tertiary paediatric hospitals with over 20 years experience working with families and children and is the father of a three-year-old and one-year-old.

In this episode they share their own experiences of sleep training and some of the moments they’re less proud of, before getting into some of the practical steps to a good night’s sleep, including routines, different methods of sleep training, sleep hygiene, teaching sleep as a skill, plus taking the pressure off both kids and parents.

“You’re not dumb” - a letter from Steph to her 16-year-old self

Hannah Dower is a PhD student working with the Western Bulldogs AFLW club to investigate the impact of the menstrual cycle and contraceptive use on elite athlete performance. Hannah has a Bachelor in Sports Science, a Masters in Exercise Physiology and a 10-year career in strength and conditioning so she is EXTREMELY qualified to answer all our menstrual cycle and PMS questions!

You might remember an episode from a few months ago where we shared about our experiences of PMS. We received so many messages from you guys saying you felt exactly the same so we decided to bring in an expert to explain everything about the menstrual cycle and PMS.

We speak about what the menstrual cycle actually is, what is happening with our hormones at various stages of our cycle, the importance of tracking your cycle, the difference between PMS and PMDD, and if we should train differently at different stages of our cycles.

We asked an expert to explain PMS - with Hannah Dower 

We’ve seen some TikTok trends we’re not sure about and we want to talk about them. The first is the “morning trend” - where people sleep in a range of convoluted and questionable products on their face and in their hair only to “shed” it all in the morning. The second is “okra water” and its dubious health claims.

Then we discuss a question we saw in Women’s Health Australia: “should I be offended if my partner doesn’t orgasm”? 

Plus we put a poll on our Instagram story asking about the orgasm gap in your relationships and 5% of you said you orgasmed more, 38% of you said your partner orgasms more, 30% orgasm equally with your partner, and 27% just wanted to suss the results 👀

Steph’s pregnant! How Steph is feeling about baby number two

If you’re a long-term listener of KICPOD you’ll remember Producer Mandy! You might also remember that Mandy was producing the podcast when Laura opened up about her fear of not coping with kids, and Mandy said she felt exactly the same. Fast forward just over one year later and Mandy is now the proud mum of her first daughter, Lyla.

Dr Kavita Krishnan is a Lactation Specialist, member of the Academy of Breastfeeding Medicine, and a mum of three, so she’s had experience both first-hand and in practice teaching thousands of women how to breastfeed.

96% of women initiate breastfeeding but by 4 months fewer than 16% exclusively breastfeed and 83% of women stop breastfeeding earlier than they’d like. In this episode, Steph sits down with Kavita to discuss some of the reasons why women stop breastfeeding.

Steph shares about her own experience breastfeeding Harvey, including nipple pain, low supply, and the early stages of mastitis and Kavita demonstrates the best position for a baby to latch with the help of a glass of water and a straw.

The reality of marathon training as a woman

If you’re an Australian millennial woman, you know Tammin Sursok. She played Dani Sutherland in Home & Away in the early 2000’s and Jenna Marshall in Pretty Little Liars. Tammin has been in the public eye since she was a teenager. Faced with that pressure, Tammin struggled with eating disorders throughout her teen years and early 20’s. 

Now Tammin has two daughters. Her experience with eating disorders informs the way she speaks to them about food and their bodies in the hope that they will never go through what she did.

In this episode Steph sits down with Tammin to learn about how eating disorders took over Tammin’s life, becoming a mum and adjusting to her postpartum body, and how she responds when one of her daughters calls herself fat.

Laura opens up about her recent panic attack

Allira Potter was never the sporty kid growing up. Like many of us, her memories of running at school were discouraging at best. But earlier this year, when she felt her mental health declining, Allira knew she needed to make a change, so she pulled on their runners and started her running journey. Allira’s first run sucked. But she stuck with it and it's changed her life.

Dr Billy Garvey is a developmental paediatrician and a senior specialist at one of Australia’s largest tertiary paediatric hospitals. He has over 20 years experience working with families and children, and training other professionals on how to work with children, plus he’s the dad of two little ones, so he's able to see first-hand how his research and advice plays out in real life.

Billy’s book ‘Ten Things I Wish You Knew About Your Child’s Mental Health’ takes the lessons Billy has learned from two decades working with families and children, including behaviour, social skills, attachment, respect, depression, anxiety and self-esteem.

In this episode Steph speaks with Billy about the biggest misconceptions people have about children’s behaviour and mental health, what to do before, during, and after a child erupts, why parents shouldn’t tell children “it’s okay” when they’re having a meltdown, emotional regulation and how parents can model it for their children, the warning signs for anxiety and depression in children, and why parents looking after their own mental health should be their number one priority.

Laura was told she's “playing the gender card”. This is what she has to say about it

A must listen ahead of the women's Olympic marathon marathon this weekend!

In the heat of the women’s 3000m steeplechase at the Tokyo Games, Gen Gregson fell and ruptured her achilles tendon. As devastating as it was that Gen’s steeplechase career was over, and her return to elite sport was uncertain, Gen saw an opportunity to fulfil another dream: becoming a mum.

Gen gave birth to her son Archer in June 2022. At 3 weeks postpartum Gen started jogging again and at 13 months postpartum she ran her debut marathon on the Gold Coast Marathon in a time of 2:28, making her the second-fastest debut marathon for an Australian woman.

Gen took another two minutes off her marathon time to qualify for the Paris Games where she will compete this Sunday.

In this episode, Gen sits down with Steph to share her story of returning to elite sport following major surgery and childbirth, how she balances family life with training for the Olympics, the village that supports her in this pursuit, including her husband Ryan Gregson who’s also a marathon runner, and why being a mum makes her a better marathon runner.

Steph's one and only one night stand

Ash Paraskevas had kissed girls long before she ever had sex with a woman. She would make out with girls in high school and tell herself it was something she was doing for attention. But after seven years in a heterosexual relationship, Ash could no longer ignore her feelings towards women. How do you tell your best friend you can’t afford her overseas wedding?

One in six people with vulvas reported feeling anxious or embarrassed about the way their labia looks. The recently published Labia Diversity Report from Women’s Health Victoria surveyed 1,030 women and people with labia aged between 18-50 about how they feel about their labia. They found 31% of those surveyed associated their labia with words like ‘weird’, ‘disgusting’ or ‘ugly’ and one in four Gen-Z were anxious about the way their labia looked.

In this special bonus episode of KICPOD, Laura sits down with Ellie Sedgwick, from Comfortable In My Skin, a platform where she shares photos and stories of the enormous diversity of labias that exist. Laura and Ellie discuss how Ellie went from contemplating a labiaplasty to taking photos of labia for a living, where the pressure to have a perfect labia comes from, and why no one needs to be ashamed of how their labia looks.

How much screen time is too much? Mandy Richardson is a child development and early parenting specialist and the creator of Raise Toddlers: a platform created to inspire and equip parents with the skills and tools they need to raise children from birth to six years old.

Very importantly, Mandy is not anti-screens!

But when she notices her three daughters have spent too much time on screens, she introduces a screen reset: time away from screens to bring them back down to baseline.

In this episode, Mandy joins Steph from Perth to discuss the impact of screen time and how to implement a screen reset if you think it could suit your family. An honest catch up about our friendship

Do you wax your butt?

Jess Quinn was one of our very first KICPOD guests way back in 2019. This week Jess returns, but this time for KICBUMP, after welcoming her first daughter Marla into the world last November. 

In our first conversation with Jess she shared her story of childhood cancer and having one of her legs amputated when she was nine years old. In this episode, Steph and Jess talk about Marla and the reality of parenting as an amputee.

Jess shares how she gained confidence in her body through pregnancy, her birth story, learning to parent with her husband Todd and how they’re finding their feet with newborn life, the things she can’t do for Marla with one leg, and all the things that Marla will gain from having a mum who’s an amputee.

For many women in their 20’s and 30’s, the tick of the biological clock can be deafening. We’re told our fertility falls off a cliff at 35 years old, so if we want children, we’d better get moving. When you add on messaging around the desire to be a “young” mum to keep up with your children, this only adds to the pressure that many women feel to make a decision that they don’t feel ready to make. 

But what if women’s fertility didn’t fall off a cliff at 35? What if it was a gradual decline rather than a sharp cliff? And what if we had role models of women having children later in their life to see that it’s not only possible, but can be just as good (and maybe even better!) than having children younger.

In this episode Laura speaks with two women at different stages in their motherhood journey. Leonie had her first child at 30 years old and wishes she’d waited longer. Sharyn had her first child at 43 years old and has no trouble keeping up with him.

Laura also speaks with Dr Karin Hammarberg, Senior Research Fellow in the Monash University School of Public Health, about the myth that women’s fertility falls off a cliff at 35.

IUD or I-U-Don’t? Steph’s big decision

The most common fear we heard from you while planning this series, was what children would do to your career. Progression, relevancy, loss of superannuation, loss of identity, and comments like "why would you have kids if you're going to go back to work," all contribute to women making the decision to have children. And with increased rates of homelessness among women in Australia, and women retiring with 28% less superannuation than men, these fears are not baseless.

But having children doesn’t have to end or derail your career. Children could even help your career.

In this episode Laura speaks with two women on different sides of the career & motherhood journey.

Founder & coach Janey Martino had three children under 3 in her early 30’s while her career was on a high. She continued working and now that her children are teenagers, she is able to role model to them what working parenthood looks like.

Career + children. Can I have both? - with Laura Henshaw

If you're talking to people about the decision to have children it’s likely you’ve heard a version of this - “parenting is really hard so if you’re not 100% sure that you want children…don’t do it”.

This episode is here to challenge that idea. The reasons people say not to have children are very convincing - you’ll never sleep again, your relationship will never be the same, you’ll never have sex again, you’ll lose your weekends. Basically your life as you know it will be over.

But it's also the best decision some people ever make.

Rebecca was adamant she didn’t want children until she hit her 30’s and a death in the family made her reconsider. Alyssa’s pregnancy took her and her partner by surprise. And Melanie faced more hurdles than most conceiving her two children.

We hate when people say “stay in your lane”. Get out of your lane!!

Whether it’s biological, circumstantial, financial, environmental, a result of trauma, or simply because you don’t want to, the reasons why people decide to be childfree are as diverse as the reasons why people decide to be parents. For many people, the decision to be childfree is met with comments like “you’ll change your mind,” or “you won’t know real love until you have a child,” or “what if you regret it?”. And with so few childfree role models showing us what a childfree life could look like, these responses can be hard to deny.

In this episode, Laura speaks with three childfree women.

Danni Duncan is a New Zealand based childfree content creator who has dedicated her life to showing people that a childfree life is not only possible, but can be totally fulfilling and empowering.

Amelia is a member of our KICPOD community who made the decision not to have children based on her own childhood.

And finally, Karen made the decision to be childfree despite having the desire to be a parent. Now she’s in her 50’s she is so happy with the decision she made.

You meet someone, you get married, you have children. Right? That’s been the status quo for so long that it can be hard to imagine an alternative. For so many people who don’t feel called to be a parent, that path doesn’t feel right. But if you’ve grown up in a world where everyone you know, and everyone you follow, and every character in every movie and every TV show is getting married and having children, how do you distinguish what you want versus what society wants you to want? And if you do decide to have children…does your whole purpose have to switch to motherhood?

To help answer these questions Laura speaks with parenthood clarity mentor Ann Davidman. Ann and Denise L. Carlini wrote the book ‘Motherhood - Is It For Me?’ and Ann runs an online Motherhood Clarity Course and Fatherhood Clarity Course for people struggling with indecision.

Do I want children or does society want me to have children? with Laura Henshaw

We talk a lot about rebuilding our relationship to food but we don’t talk as much about our relationship to exercise. Off the back of Laura’s HIIT classes in the Kic app, and the D&M we responded to last week about listening to your body, we wanted to talk about it. When old exercise patterns trigger us

Jess Sanders is a social worker and children’s author. Her latest book ‘You Can Do Hard Things - A Little One’s Guide For Not Giving Up’ helps children see disappointments as opportunities.

A growth mindset empowers children to believe in themselves and reach their full potential. When Ash Paraskevas was in her early 20’s she was in a longterm relationship, studying law (as the first person in her family to attend uni) and competing in Miss World. From the outside - it looked like she had it all. But inside she was struggling with severe anxiety, depression, domestic abuse and changing everything about herself to try and fit in and be loved.

In this episode Ash generously shares how she built herself back from rock bottom to a place where she’s now living fully and authentically as herself and proud of it, including stripping back the layer of who she thought she “should” be and stepping into her sexuality as a lesbian woman.

The vicious cycle of food fixation

This episode is tough but a really important conversation for every parent and person with young people in their lives. Grooming refers to an older child or adult establishing a trusting relationship with a child or their family to sexually abuse or exploit the child. The average age that a child is abused is 6.8 years old and 90% of children who are abused know their abuser. 

To help make sense of it all, Steph speaks with Jayneen Sanders. Jayneen is a mum of three, author and educator who writes children’s books on body boundaries, respect, consent, body safety, feelings and emotions.

In this episode, they speak about what grooming actually is, the red flags parents can look out for, how parents can live with the fear of letting their children out of their sights, what to do if you suspect your child is being groomed, and what support exists.
